Lowboy Semi Trailers

Lowboy Semi Trailers
By Jim McCormack

Lowboy trailers, also known as low bed trailers, are utilized for loading and transporting heavy equipment. The capacity for hauling starts at ten tons to 100 or even more. This is the ideal solution for hauling farm equipment, or construction machines such as tractors and excavators. They are designed to work well in field conditions for convenient loading and unloading heavy machinery and equipment.

There are many types of lowboy trailers available from leading manufacturers. The size and weight capacity needed should be determined by the specifications of the haul and what the continued use will be. They are also available in a variety of colors and custom paint jobs to suit individual preferences. Identify what field conditions will be present before deciding on the model best suited.

Fontaine makes a 46’ lowboy trailer with a capacity of 35 tons. This model includes ramps for easy loading and unloading of equipment. The same manufacturer makes a 55 ton model for heavier machinery. Lowboy trailers can be fixed neck or detachable with beaver tail or tilt bed options. Determine the conditions in which loading and unloading will occur to determine what options are best. Researching different manufacturers will allow ideal selection. Manufacturers such as Trail King, Talbert, Aspen and Liddell all make lowboy trailers.

Caution should be used whenever loading, unloading or hauling heavy equipment. Ensure the load is secure and attached correctly. Please also check local requirements for hauling and transporting as there may be permits or special licenses required. Hauling oversize merchandise generally requires a special permit.

Price of lowboy trailers widely varies depending on the specifications, year of the model and condition. However, these varieties are designed to be durable and many people find purchasing used equipment much more affordable. There are many variables in determining the type of lowboy trailer that is best. The length, well depth and weight capacity are of prime concern. Check the ground clearance to ensure it is suitable for the means of transportation and the unloading destination. Axles, wheels, brakes and tires should all be in good condition before purchasing a used lowboy.

Feller bunchers are used to clear cut standing groves of trees and then stack the felled logs onto special sleds called skidders for removal. Some feller bunchers use powerful hydraulic shears to clip smaller diameter trees, while others use oversized chainsaw blades or large rotary saws to slice through larger ones. Most feller bunchers utilize one of two chassis designs, depending on the conditions on the site. Light to medium duty feller bunchers use a rubber-tired tractor chassis, similar to backhoes. Heavy duty feller bunchers or those working in muddy or uneven fields may use tracked designs also found on bulldozers. Many well-known manufacturers of farming equipment, including Case, John Deere and International Harvester, also make feller bunchers for the timber industry. In the field, feller bunchers perform most of the same duties as human lumberjacks. Trained operators drive their feller bunchers into one end of a stand of trees and switch on the cutters or saw blades. Each tree is held in place by a hydraulically-controlled clamp as the blades cut through the tree close to ground level. The tree is then maneuvered to a skidder, essentially a giant sled which can be attached to a tractor and dragged to another area for processing. Whenever a forestry agency orders a thinning of an existing grove, feller bunchers are generally used to minimize damage. Trees can be cut in place and moved out without collapsing on other inhabitants of the forest. Feller bunchers are also useful for wholesale removal of trees from construction sites. They can literally plow through an entire stand of trees in a few hours.

Blades can also be adjusted to cut off trees at any selected height. Much of the heavy equipment used in the logging or timber industries can be dangerous, but feller bunchers have acquired a reputation for being especially hazardous to operate. It is impossible to predict precisely how a large tree will react after being cut, and operators of feller bunchers are often placed at ground zero. The weight of the tree may pull the entire machine off the ground or errant branches may suddenly enter the driver’s compartment. The saw blades may become enmeshed in a tree, requiring a dangerous extraction. While in operation, feller bunchers cannot be rendered completely safe. For this reason, many logging operations try to limit the number of workers in the vicinity of a feller buncher in action.

The 2004 B7800 continues Kubotas strategy of offering economy versions of their Deluxe models such as the B2410, B2710 / B2910. These economy offerings allow Kubota to position itself as a cheaper alternative to the competition, by removing features that many consumers may not need. Note the round headlights, these look like sealed beam lights from a distance, however closer inspection reveals that they have a relatively low wattage tail light bulb for the light source. This is rated as an economy tractor so perhaps this is one of the areas that aids in lowering the price point. In contrast the "D" models of New Holland offer powerful halogen headlights, while the Deere 4XXX series also does. The bucket below is on the Kubota 402 loader and comes with the pictured grill guard. The loader joystick stays on the tractor and you can just make it out in the picture up high by the steering column. Parked next to the B7800 is a B23, note how the total rops height is almost identical in this picture. The B7800 remains one of the few compact tractors that sports a steel hood cover. Most manufacturers have migrated to Fiberglass hood designs. There are pros and cons in the "fiberglass" versus "steel" debate. Fiberglass stands up better to moisture, cannot chip or peel, also it can be formed to allow for better visibility for mower and front loader use. On the steel side if a rock hits it will dent, whereas the fiberglass will crack or fracture. Note how flat the hood is and the location of the fuel filler cap positioned under the loader cross support. When refueling your tractor with the loader installed the loader crossbar is close to the filler cap. If you are accustomed to using a funnel to fill your tractor you may need to use a can with a spout, a flexible funnel or a syhon to more easily refuel your tractor.
